Chip Ingram’s Good to Great in God’s Eyes will be added to my list of yearly reads. This is a new list I’m making, as I don’t have any other books that I read over and over each year.

I generally read a book and move on to the next one. So many books, so little time. But that’s how much of an impact this book has had on me. I will read it regularly in order to constantly remind myself to strive for greatness in my walk with my God, who has always given me his best.

Ingram dispels the belief that Christians shouldn’t attempt great things and success as long as the desire is for God’s glory and not selfish gain. What I like most about this book is it recognizes that although living a good Christian life is what most people strive for, the great Christian life is what God expects. There is simply no room in our walk for the status quo. God is always calling us to make a tremendous impact on the world around us. For him. Ingram doesn’t suggest a list of dos and don’ts to gain favor with God. He simply lays out a list of habits that effective Christians seem to have in common.

And Ingram doesn’t just list the same old disciplines everyone already expects: praying, bible study and missions. He expands the list to include things like thinking great thoughts, dreaming great dreams and reading great books. Now, as an avid reader, I’ve always thought reading should be a priority for everyone but never would’ve suggested reading books as something necessary to the development of Christian greatness. But it’s the ability of the impact of the written word to completely change one’s point of view that does make it an integral part of becoming the kind of Christian that reaches their God-given potential. I will no longer be harassed by my family about carrying books around in my purse. I will tell them I’m on my way to spiritual greatness.

After having read the book in a couple of sittings, I will now go through it and read it one chapter at a time in order to truly soak in each chapter and put into practice some of the insights. It is extremely challenging, inspirational and transparent. Ingram’s personal stories and experiences make the book engaging and highly encouraging. He offers clear, practical steps to becoming an extraordinary disciple.

So only read this book if you want to go to greater heights with God. You’ll feel mighty uncomfortable afterward if you’re unwilling to go further than you’ve ever gone before.
